Comprehensive Medical Eye Exams

Your Exam

Clear vision begins with healthy eyes. At WestGlen Eyecare, your doctor will provide a comprehensive medical evaluation of your vision and complete eye health. Our doctors provide eye care that is thorough, comfortable, and accurate. We diagnose and treat eye infections, ocular diseases of the eye including Diabetes, Glaucoma, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration as well as Dry Eyes, Eye Allergy, and ocular emergencies.

Visual Acuity

This measures how well you can see from a distance and near. Your doctor will ask you to identify different letters on a monitor across the exam room.

Visual Field

Your doctor may order an AUTOMATED MATRIX VISUAL FIELD EXAM, which is a computerized measurement of peripheral vision used to screen for neurologic disease and Glaucoma.

Binocular Vision Evaluation

Your doctor may also perform a cover test and stereopsis evaluation, which measures the ability of your eyes to work and team together. Many people experience blurred vision and eyestrain because of poor eye muscle coordination.

Refraction

This is a procedure done using a phoropter or retinoscope by showing a series of lens choices to you to determine the most accurate prescription to provide you with the sharpest, clearest, most comfortable vision. For some patients who can’t respond verbally or when some of the eyes focusing power may be hidden, eye drops and other objective methods are used to accurately determine their glasses prescription.

Neurological Testing, Pupil, Extraocular Motility

These tests measure the function of your pupils and the muscles that move your eyes to screen for neurological conditions.

Glaucoma Screening

New technology allows us to measure the pressure in your eyes with a “No Air-puff” glaucoma test. Glaucoma is a symptomless disease that can cause blindness, and your exam includes screening for this “silent thief” of sight.

Dry Eye Testing

Biomicroscopic Slit Lamp Examination

Careful examination of the anterior segment including your eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, iris and crystalline lens are done with the use of a special microscope using light and magnification.

Retinal Examination

One of the most important parts of your eye examination is the retinal exam. Early detection of eye disease is often the key to preventing vision loss. A thorough retinal examination is done by either dilating the pupils or the Daytona OptoMap digital retinal exam. This technology allows the doctor to take high resolution photographs of your retina to screen for diseases with your blood vessels, diabetic retinopathy, high blood pressure, glaucoma, macular degeneration and many other disorders of the retina.

Advanced Technology

Phoroptor

The phoropter is a machine used to help accurately determine a patient’s glasses and contact lens prescription. As you look through the phoropter, the doctor will show you a series of lenses asking you to choose between choices “1” or “2”. Together, you’ll accurately determine your prescription for the sharpest vision possible.

Keratometry / AutoRefractor

This device shines a light into the eye that bounces from the back of the eye to the front giving an accurate digital measurement of prescription and topographical map of a detailed shape and curve of your cornea, the transparent part of the eye that refracts light and covers the iris and pupil. It’s used to accurately and comfortably fit contact lenses to the eye and to diagnose astigmatism.

iCare Tonometry – Non “Air-Puff” Glaucoma Test

Tonometry measures the intraocular pressure inside the eyes, and is used to screen for glaucoma, a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. iCare Tonometry is the absolute latest in technology which No-Air-Puff technology to very elegantly and comfortably check for glaucoma without eye drops or Air-puff.

Daytona OptoMap Retinal Exam

Optomapallows your eye doctor examine your eyes without using drops to dilate them. With the state-of-the-art Daytona Optomap, in a split second, your eyes are digitally scanned and captured in a color image that shows a “map” of your visual system. Using these images, your optometrist will be able to give you advice on the necessary eyewear that will help keep your eyes healthy.

Plus, since your eyes weren’t dilated, after the exam you can go about the rest of your day after the exam without worrying about sensitivity to light or difficulties focusing.

OPTOMAP Retinal Exam

Annual eye exams are vital to maintaining your vision and overall health. We offer the Optomap® Retinal Exam as an important part of our eye exams. The Optomap® Retinal Exam produces an image that is as unique as you fingerprint and provides us with a wide view to look at the health of your retina. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera.

Our office carries the latest in Optos technology:

Many eye problems can develop without you knowing. You may not even notice any change in your sight. But, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachments or tumors, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina.

Screen Shot 2015-08-13 at 2.09.03 PM

The new Daytona Optomap® Retinal Exam provides:

  • A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.
  • A view of the retina, giving your doctor a more detailed view than he/she can get by other means.
  • The opportunity for you to view and discuss the Optomap® image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam.
  • A permanent record for your file, which allows us to view your images each year to look for changes.

The Optomap® Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages.  To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The Optomap® image is shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you.

Ophthalmoscope / Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope (BIO)

The Ophthalmoscope is an instrument that your doctor uses to examine the inside of your eye.  Once your eyes are dilated, your doctor may use an ophthalmoscope or BIO and other lenses to check for cataracts, retinal problems, damaged blood vessels, glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and macular degeneration.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) Scans

An Optical Coherence Tomography scan (commonly referred to as an OCT scan) is the latest advancement in imaging technology. Similar to ultrasound, this diagnostic technique employs light rather than sound waves to achieve higher resolution pictures of the structural layers of the back of the eye.

A scanning laser used to analyze the layers of the retina and optic nerve for any signs of eye disease, similar to an OCT scan of the eye. It works using light without radiation, and is essential for early diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinal disease.

With an OCT scan, doctors are provided with color-coded, cross-sectional images of the retina. These detailed images are revolutionizing early detection and treatment of eye conditions such as wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment and diabetic retinopathy.

An OCT scan is a noninvasive, painless test. It is performed in about 10 minutes right in our office. Feel free to contact our office to inquire about an OCT at your next appointment.

EHR Electronic Health Records

Our practice has been radically transformed by digital technology – iPads have transformed our daily lives and the way we communicate and the way we practice. We’ve invested in the latest Electronic Health Records (EHR) technology to help improved patient communication, records accuracy, and E-Prescribing saving our patients time in our office and at their Pharmacy.

Our Services

Eye Disease

Many eye diseases, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, have no symptoms in their early stages. Your eye doctor will check the health of your eyes inside and out for signs of early problems. In most cases, early detection and treatment of eye diseases can help reduce your risk for permanent vision loss.

Diabetic Eye Exam

Diabetes is the leading cause of preventable blindness among Americans, (National Institutes of Health NIH). Most cases could be prevented with regular eye exams and appropriate treatment. A dilated Eye examination or OptoMap Retinal Exam helps to detect diabetic retinopathy, the vision-threatening damage to the retina caused by your eye’s blood vessels. Our Eye Doctors may be able to tell you if you are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol or other systemic problems.

Glaucoma Testing and Treatment

Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of vision because it often has no warning signs or symptoms of pain or vision loss. During your exam your doctor will check your IOP (Intraocular pressure) and evaluate your optic nerve. If your eye pressure is elevated or your optic nerve looks suspicious for glaucoma, your doctor will likely perform visual field tests and specialized scans of your retina and optic nerve to determine if you have glaucoma.

Dry Eye Treatment

The most common symptoms of Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome include: burning, stinging, redness, and excessive tearing and gritty tired eyes. Chronic Dry Eye is often due to advanced age, contact lens wear, certain medications, eye diseases, other medical conditions, or environmental factors. One type of Chronic Dry Eye disease is caused by reduced tear production due to inflammation of the ocular surface and or (MGD) meibomian gland dysfunction. Our doctors at WestGlen Eyecare specialize in testing, diagnosing, and treatment of all forms of Dry Eye Syndrome and offer a wide range of treatment options including:

• Rx Restasis or Steroids
RESTASIS® is the only eye drop that helps increase your eyes’ natural ability to produce tears, which may be reduced by inflammation due to Chronic Dry Eye disease. Topical steroids are also another way to combat ocular surface inflammation.

• Tear Supplements and Artificial Tears
Supplemenating tears with OTC Artificial tears, may provide temporary relief. Additions of Omega-3 Fish oil and or Flax seed oil can also improve the quality of your tears.

• Punctal Tear Plugs
Plugs are gently inserted to plug the ducts that drain tears from your eyes. This conserves the small amount of tears you have remaining on the eye, rather than draining into the tear duct. This painless quick procedure is performed by your eye doctor in the office and often yields amazing results.
